As a vet at Victoria's Phillip Island Nature Parks vet, Dr Kelly O' Sullivan gets to hang out with penguins all day long! She gives K-Zone the deets on her job.
What's the best thing about what you
do?
Kelly: Working with such a diverse mix of animals and wildlife is fantastic. The best part is seeing where our rehabilitation efforts have been successful and returning animals to the wild!
How did you become so interested in
animals?
Kelly: I had so many pets when I was a child - dogs, cats, goldfish, budgies and quails, a Galah, turtles, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks and even lambs at one point! I've wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember.
What's your fave animal flick?
Kelly: Madagascar is pretty cool.
KZ: Spill! Do you ever talk to the animals?
Kelly: Just quietly we do! But it is best to keep absolutely quiet around rehabilitating wildlife.
KZ: Do you have any pets at home?
Kelly: I have a dog called Milly, she is a 10 year old Koolie dog (like a Border Collie, just more colourful)!
What tips could you give to K-Zoners
who would like to get into wildlife
rehabilitation?
Kelly: Offer to do volunteer time to help places like the RSPCA and the Penguin Parade at the Phillip Island Nature Parks Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Even offering to help out at the local vet clinics can give you a lot of insight in to helping animals.
Did you know?
* Penguins chomp through about 100 tonnes of fish a year - that's more than 100,000 tins of tuna!
* Penguin parents and chicks have unique calls between them, so they can always find each other.
* Penguins can swim as fast as 8km per hour, about the same as the average Olympic freestyler!
