Wanna make your own ancient rocks but don't have a billion years to spare? Try this!
What You Need:
- Aluminium foil
- Modelling clay
- Plaster of Paris
- Toothpick
What To Do:
1. Take a few layers of foil and scrunch it into a bowl shape.
2. Soften up your modelling clay and form it into a ball. Put it in your foil bowl.
3. Grab a shell and press it, patterned side down, into the clay. Wiggle it around a bit to make a good imprint, then use a toothpick to pull it out again. Smooth around the imprinted area.
4. Mix up your Plaster of Paris (two parts plaster, one part water), then pour it over your clay mould. Leave it for an hour or two to set.
5. Peel off the foil and remove the plaster from the mould, and voila! Fair dinkum fossils in less than a day!
Fossil Factoid: Fossils are formed when an animal, shell or leaf is covered in mud and left for millions of years. The mud stops the object decaying, keeps it shapes and eventually turns into rock.
