Taj Burrow is heading to Newcastle (NSW) for this year's 26th Annual Burton Toyota Surfest from March 9-20, 2011. Surfest is the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest surf festival, showcasing of the biggest names in surfing. Pip Cowley from K-Zone was lucky enough to ask Taj a few questions!
KZ: How old were you when you first started surfing?
Taj: I was 7. Both my parents surfed so I didn't have a choice really.
KZ: What made you want to become a pro surfer?
Taj: Tom Curren and Occy, two of my all time hero's.
KZ: What's your training routine?
Taj: A lot of core work, eating healthy and stretching. I don't do much running, it puts too much stress on the body. I usually train three-five times a week.
KZ: What's your most memorable moment on from being on the pro tour so far?
Taj: Winning the Pipe Masters in 2009 was pretty special! It was unbelievable to tick that off the list.
KZ: Where and when was your biggest wipeout? Can you describe that moment for us?
Taj: I got hammered at Teahupoo a few years back, scared the hell out of me.
KZ: What's your signature surf trick?
Taj: I guess that would probably be a frontside air reverse although I do love kicking the fins out on the backside.
KZ: Where's your favourite surf break in the world and why?
Taj: Keramas in Bali is right up there, you couldn't draw a better wave if you tried. But I also love a few spots around where I grew up in Yallingup, I can't name them but god they're good.
KZ: If you could take on any surfer head to head from the past or present, who would it be?
Taj: I'd love to surf against Tom Curren in his prime.
KZ: What do you like doing when you're not surfing?
Taj: I play a bit of tennis and spend a heap of time posting on my site tajburrow.com
KZ: What are your top tips for kids who want to become pro surfers?
Taj: Surf everyday, not matter what the waves are like.
KZ: What's the plan for 2011?
Taj: Win contests, stay fit and injury free.
KZ: You're on tour in Newcastle at the moment, what's the best thing about visiting Newcastle and surfing here?
Taj: I love newcastle. It's the best set up for watching surfing.
KZ: What can kids expect to see if they come to Newcastle for the 26th Annual Burton Toyota Surfest?
Taj: Plenty of hi-fi surfing. Get down there you little grubs!
Quick Facts:
• Biggest wave ever surfed: 20ft
