The Space Chimps aren't the only mad monkeys. Real chimps are all about brawling, back-slapping and bananas! |

Like people, chimps use tools. Talk about brainiacs!

Lou Grossfeldt looks after the chimpanzees at Taronga Zoo. She gives us all the chimpformation!
KZ:
What's a usual day for you and the chimpanzees?
LG: We kick things off at 6.30am with a nice breakfast for the chimps, while the keepers clean the paddock. The chimps then go outside for the day where they're given another four or five feeds. They go to bed at around 5pm each night and get lots of shredded paper to build nests with!
KZ:
What do chimps eat - do they really go bananas for, well, bananas?
LG: Chimps dig all sorts of fruit and vegies, and sometimes they'll hunt and eat meat in the wild, like monkeys, bush pigs and antelope. And yes - they LOVE bananas!!
KZ:
What's the craziest thing about working with chimpanzees?
LG: They are soooooo intelligent, funny, often unpredictable, sometimes aggressive, but also affectionate.
KZ:
Word is, chimps are prank-stars. Is this true?
LG: Yep - the young chimps like to sneak up on the older chimps and smack them on the back, then run off. It's a great game, but often causes a massive brawl!!
KZ: It's time to play favourites! Which Taronga Zoo chimp is your fave?
LG: Definitely Lubutu. I started working with him when he was born and he's now 15. He's our Alpha male and although he can be a bit boisterous, he's great with the infants and is a good role model! |
