ESCAPE ARTISTS Octopuses might belong to the same family as slugs and snails but they're heaps smarter. They have the largest and most advanced brain of any invertebrate (a creature without a spine). In fact, it's tricky to keep an octopus as a pet 'cos they get bored easily and will escape. A grapefruit-sized octopus can squeeze through a coin-sized hole in search of adventure and food! OPEN SESAME A few octopuses have made the headlines for being able to open a jar in record time. Frieda, Roger Moore and Einstein Octopus, have all mastered the art of pressing their body against the jar then grasping the lid with their eight tentacles to open it and snatch out the tasty treats inside. Frieda only takes 10 seconds to get a jar open, which she learnt after watching zoo-keepers! ENORMOUS IQ Elephants have the largest brain of all land animals - weighing 5kg - and are up there with dolphins and apes as really smart creatures. Elephants use tools to dig holes, can be trained to paint pictures with their trunks and have an awesome memory. ADD IT UP Elephants are also great at maths! Scientists have conducted tests where they quickly dropped apples into buckets to see if the elephants could pick which bucket had more fruit in it. After tons of tests, the elephants counted up the bigger bucket of apples more accurately than humans did, proving they're better at adding up speedily than we are! |
