KZ: Hi Xolo! Do you have any unusual skills that would surprise K-Zoners?
X: I can cook a mean breakfast sandwich, and I’m a really big music enthusiast. Everything from jazz to hip-hop and recently some metal. I’m also the Dungeon Master for a bi-weekly Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
KZ: Do you have any advice for K-Zoners who want to act?
X: Be genuine. People will love you for who you are, you can’t change for someone else. That’s not just in acting, but in life as well. It sounds cliché but I’ve found that more opportunities present themselves when you are genuinely nice person. People will want to work with you. Secondly, always stay humble and respect your parents; we’re nothing without them!
KZ: When did you learn karate?
X: From six to nine years old, I attended the Las Vegas Shotokan Academy and it was incredibly rigorous training. I excelled in Kata, but not so much in actual combat. It was surprising how much came back during the auditions. I was able to get some muscle memory going for auditions. I guess it must have looked like I could get in shape.
KZ: Can you explain what happens to your character, Miguel Diaz, in season one of Cobra Kai?
X: After my character, Miguel, is saved by a mysterious man using karate skills, he becomes obsessed with learning karate too!
KZ: K-Zoners love pranks! Were there many pranks on the set of Cobra Kai's first season?
X: I love scaring people! Popping out of a corner is my speed, nothing too elaborate, but seeing reactions is my favorite part. During the last week on set, Mary filled my backpack with coins and I didn’t realize until I lifted it. By that time we were filming, so I had to walk around with it. I’m still thinking of how to get her back.
KZ: What was your favourite scene to shoot in the first season of Cobra Kai?
X: Any scenes with Billy (who plays Johnny) or Jacob (who plays Eli) were always a blast to shoot. I also have a fun scene with Mary (who plays Samantha) that took a whole day. It was filled with laughs and fun, I’m so excited to see how it plays out on screen because it was one of the best days while filming.
Cobra Kai is streaming now on Netflix! This show is for older K-Zoners!
