Help build Darth's favourite weapon!
Before Star Wars Day (AKA May the 4th), LEGO wants your help building one of the most iconic vehicles from the Star Wars universe!

One of only seven LEGO Master Builders in the world, Chris Steininger, is flying in from the US to create the southern hemisphere’s biggest Death Star out of LEGO bricks at Westfield Warringah on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April. The massive build will celebrate international Star Wars Day, and the 40th anniversary of the first ever Star Wars film. You’ll also be able to destroy the Death Star using incred augmented reality technology, just like Luke Skywalker, and see it explode into hundreds of LEGO bricks!

The Death Star build will measure 2.4m in circumference and use 210,000 bricks and weigh 545kg. Whoa… We caught up with Chris to chat about this awesome build! Check it out below!

LEGO Master Builder, Chris Steininger

KZ: Hi Chris! How much planning goes into building the southern hemisphere’s biggest Death Star out of LEGO?

C: It took about five months to plan the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest Death Star with about 12 people in the model shop working on it. It will take around three full days of building to complete it!

KZ: Visitors will be able to see the LEGO Death Star explode in augmented reality, which is awesome, but would obviously be stressful if it broke IRL. What was the worst moment you’ve ever had while building something with LEGO? Has anything ever broken or have you gotten far into the process before realising something is wrong?

C: Actually, believe it or not we've never had a model fail catastrophically on us before. There's a lot of time in planning that goes into our builds to ensure that we don't have any issues, not to say we haven't had small minor issues but - that's why we are master builders. We know how to fix any problems before they become a big one!

KZ: In 2015, you helped to construct the world’s biggest LEGO Millennium Falcon in Melbourne. If you could keep the Millennium Falcon build or the Death Star, which would you want?

C: This is a tough question as I am a major Star Wars fan! It's a close one and it's hard to pick the Death Star because I haven't built it yet… On Sunday, I’ll let you know!

KZ: The big question... Are you light side, or dark side?

C: The light side. Who doesn't want to be the hero?

KZ: Why should K-Zoners head over to Westfield Warringah to help build the Death Star?

C: K-Zoners should head over to Westfield Warringah to help me build the Death Star as it’s a once-in-a-lifetime lifetime opportunity to tell people you helped to build the biggest Death Star in the Southern Hemisphere. We’re also gonna make sure that everyone who comes by is going to have a great time in the lead up to May the 4th!

If you want to head to Westfield Warringah in Brookvale, Sydney and help Chris build the LEGO Death Star, the event is totally free and you can come dressed as your fave Star Wars character for the chance to win a LEGO Star Wars goodie bag!

On Saturday April 29 and Sunday April 30, help LEGO Master Builder Chris Steininger build the LEGO Death Star. At 2pm, on Sunday April 30, you can see the Final Brick Moment as the last bricks are added to the build. From Monday May 1 – Friday May 5, you can check out the LEGO Star Wars Death Star on display!

If you love LEGO Star Wars builds, be sure to grab the May issue of K-Zone, on sale now, and check out the awesome LEGO Star Wars U-Wing Fighter!
