Jarryd Foster is about as righteous as they come - he just won the Oakley Big Wave award in the biggest wave category. How big was the wave you ask? Oh, just 12 metres high. K-Zone got to chat to Jarryd about all his surfing adventures, and what it takes to be a pro!
KZ: What's does winning the Oakley Big Wave Awards mean to you?
Jarryd: That I proved to myself and Australia that I have the ability to achieve such awards, which means a lot to myself and the wider surfing community because it shows I have the skills to mix with the best.
KZ: What attracts you to the really big waves?
Jarryd: The power while riding it. Experiencing that volume of water and energy at your feet while I choose a line to ride. Also the people I do it with, they all see the world a little differently.
KZ: Describe Cow Bombie and your winning ride.
Jarryd: Cow is a big wave reef break situated a few kilometers out to sea. When it gets hit by a large swell it's one of the biggest waves in the Southern Hemisphere.
KZ: Tell us about your board. What makes a good one? What's special about your favourite board?
Jarryd: My boards are all special boards. Their shape is designed for going super quick and they have more weight to them than usual surfboards. They need to go extra fast because big waves move so much faster.
KZ: Paddle, jet ski or helicopter? Or all of the above?
Jarryd: Paddle, as you want to be a confident swimmer, be fit and relaxed. Paddling gives you the most rewarding experience. Jet skis are helpful for getting into waves that are too big or heavy to paddle and helicopters would be great to search for surf.
KZ: What's the best thing about being a pro surfer?
Jarryd: There are waves everywhere in the world and the best thing about that is surfing with others who are keen on doing the same thing as you are. Surfing these waves is special too.
KZ: Do you ever get heaps of sand in your boardies?
Jarryd: Sometimes, sand is great!!
KZ: Are you into videogames?
Jarryd: Yes! I love skate games but it's about time a surfing game came out.
KZ: What are you playing at mo?
Jarryd: I still love Super Smash Bros.
