Meet An Animator and Visual Effects Artist

Meet An Animator and Visual Effects Artist

Alexei Hatherley recently worked as an animator and visual effects artist on new show, The Gamers 2037, which is streaming now on 9Now!

KZ: Hi Alexei! How would you explain your job, and your role working on The Gamers 2037?

A: I am an animator and visual effects artist which means I get to create and animate characters and bring their worlds to life. My role on The Gamers 2037 was to design and animate various characters, elements, monsters and the game worlds which the gamers find themselves in.

KZ: What inspired or influenced your decision to follow this career path?

A: Since I was a kid, I’ve always been a fan of animation. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, there were great cartoons on TV – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Dragon Ball Z were definitely favourites of mine. I have also always found inspiration in Japanese animation. Ever since I was about 11, I remember dreaming up stories, then drawing characters and the world they each inhabited. I always knew this was what I wanted to do, so I set out to learn the skills I needed to make it happen.

KZ: What are the best and worst parts of your job?

A: The best part of my job is having creative freedom to create straight from my imagination and be free to immerse myself in the world of the characters I am working on. Creating a television show takes so many people bringing their best every day, it’s really amazing to see everything come together at the end. The worst part is well... I really love my job so I guess the worst thing that can happen in any creative job you love is that you can really get deep into your work and you need to remember to check out and spend enough time with friends and family.
