Matt Braly is the creator of the new show, Amphibia, on Disney Channel! We asked Matt about his life as a creator, so check out his answers in this gallery!
Amphibia follows the adventures of a self-centred 13-year-old girl called Anne Boonchuy, who steals a mysterious music box on her birthday and finds herself magically transported to a wild marshland full of talking frog-people. Anne meets and befriends an adventurous frog named Sprig Plantar, and lives with his family in Amphibia!
KZ: Can you share a behind the scenes fact with K-Zoners?
M: The original pitch for the show was called ‘Amphibi-Anne.’ After that it was called ‘Amphibiland’. Finally we landed on the name Amphibia, which is much easier to say.
KZ: Should K-Zoners keep an eye out for Easter eggs?
M: Absolutely. I cut my teeth working on a wonderful show called Gravity Falls, so I definitely developed a penchant for hiding little secrets and references in my own show as well. I won’t name them here, but definitely keep your eyes peeled.
KZ: What has been the hardest part about making the show?
M: It’s been challenging to balance the show’s episodic nature with serialised elements. It’s hard to keep one eye on the long form story arc while simultaneously making sure the character story of each 11 minute episode works well on its own. Character wise, we worked hard to make sure Anne didn’t feel like any other protagonist on TV. She’s incredibly flawed, but in a way that makes you root for her. It was difficult, but we’re very proud of it.
KZ: If you could visit Amphibia for a day, where would you go and which character would you hang out with?
M: I would definitely want to check out the Plantar home and hang out with the core family (Anne included)! The house was designed lovingly with all kinds of nooks and crannies that beg to be explored and admired. It has this great Hobbit-y vibe that I know I would enjoy experiencing.
KZ: If you had the magic music box, where would you want to be transported?
M: I would kill for a simple transportation device that could take me to Bangkok, Thailand in an instant. That 14-hour flight is BRUTAL. I would also feel less disconnected from my Thai side of the family this way.
KZ: Many animated characters always wear the same clothes. If your life was turned into a cartoon, what would you want to wear every day?
M: If my life was turned into a cartoon, I would definitely wear a grey/blue hoodie. I am rarely seen without one. So much so that crew members have actually gasped when they see me wearing something else.
KZ: Do you have any unusual hobbies or talents?
M: I love playing tennis, watching anime, and playing videogames. None of this is unusual, I am sad to report. Talent wise, I’ve been told I have an insanely good memory. It’s a blessing and a curse.
Amphibia premieres Sunday August 18 at 7:30am on Disney Channel!
