Behind The Scenes of Big Hero 6

Meet Ryan Potter, the voice actor of Hiro!

Before voicing Hiro in Big Hero 6, Ryan Potter was involved in all sorts of TV shows involving everything from ninjas to Internet sensations. Here, K-Zone got to chat with Ryan about robots and life behind the scenes of Big Hero 6!

KZ: What do you think is the main difference between voice acting and acting on screen?

Ryan: They’re completely different worlds. Voice acting is very freeing because you don’t have to be on set, or be in a costume, it’s just your voice and your imagination.

KZ: What’s something cool about the behind the scenes process of creating an animated film that most people wouldn't know?

Ryan: The voice actors don’t actually work with one another, everyone records separately! But something more secretive I guess is that Disney has probably the greatest catering service known to mankind! When you go to work you have a zillion types of tea and coffee, muffins, fruit, vegetables, just everything.

KZ: Cool! Besides the catering, what is it about working with Disney that’s special?

Ryan: It sounds corny, but Disney’s just got magic. When you go in to work for a Disney animated film, there are these expectations that you want to meet, that Disney magic that you have to find, and with the help of the creators, you’re able to find it.

KZ: What is Hiro’s best quality?

Ryan: It’s definitely not his sense of fashion, that’s for sure! I think Hiro's resolve is something people can look up to. When he puts his mind to something, he just gets it done.

KZ: What was the weirdest line you had to say when voicing Hiro?

“Bah-a-la-la-la!” Because Scott Adsit, who voiced Baymax made that up! It kind of came out as his idea of what a robot would sound like making an explosion noise. So when Disney wrote it down on paper, I looked at them like they were crazy, like “You want me to say ‘Bah-a-la-la-la’?” And they would say, “No, it’s not ‘Bah-a-la-la-la’…it’s ‘Bah-a-la-LA-la!’” So it just took a hundred times to get it right.

KZ: If you could make a robot that could do anything, what would you make?

Ryan: A chef robot, I don’t even need to think about that!

Big Hero 6 is coming out on DVD, Blu-ray and will be available for digital download on March 25.
