Here at KZ HQ, we’re absolutely losing our minds with excitement over the AFL finals. Imagine how the players must feel! We got the goods from Hawthon’s Cyril Rioli and West Coast’s Luke Shuey.
What's your game day routine?
Cyril: Spaghetti the night before and some sort of water activity like ice baths or a swim to feel good.
Luke: I take my dog Marley for a walk before breakfast and then listen to some music and start getting ready for the game.
How is playing finals footy different from the home and away season?
Luke: The atmosphere and intensity goes up. It’s exciting playing in front of huge crowds.
Cyril: I think the hype of finals gets to some players, where they are playing on the big stage with everything on the line.
What's the etiquette for being a good winner? And what about being a good loser?
Cyril: Being humble after a win and shaking your opponent’s hand and then learning from a loss how you can improve individually and as a team.
Luke: Yeah, be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.
How do you keep your focus under pressure?
Luke: I have clear goals for the game and work towards those.
Cyril: Plus sticking to what I'm good at and reminding myself I have done everything right to get me where I am.
What superpower would be really handy in a grand final?
Cyril: Superman powers.
Luke: Yeah, like the ability to fly for marks!
Got any tips for K-Zoners who want to play their best in finals?
Cyril: Keep up your routine and normal focus on game day. It’s just another game to win. Stick to your team. Teamwork overrides the individual.
Luke: And don’t forget to train hard during the week – and have fun!
