Meet A Film, Videogame and Book Artist

We chat to artist David Hardy to celebrate the new book, Somebody's Land, written by Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing. David illustrated the book and has also worked in animated films and videogames.

KZ: Hi David! What are your earliest memories of creating art?

D: I have been drawing my whole life. I remember when I was really young, I had coloured in a section of wallpaper in my bedroom. I was so proud of myself as I coloured within the lines, but I got in trouble from my parents for drawing on the walls.

KZ: When did you realise you wanted to work in animation or illustration?

D: When I was young watching cartoons on TV, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Illustration has always been a huge part of my life and I’m grateful I can do it for a living.

KZ: Did anyone or anything inspire or influence your decision?

D: My parents were always very supportive of me and my artistic talents.

KZ: What is the best thing about being an artist, and the hardest part?

D: The best thing is definitely doing what I love for a career. The hardest part is being in a competitive industry. This makes It hard when first starting out, but believe in your talent and stick with it!

KZ: Can you share a secret from behind the scenes that might surprise K-Zoners?

D: I sketch my kids a lot as reference in my books.

KZ: Did you take part in any activities as a child that you feel contributed to your unique style or influenced the way you approach art?

D: I played a lot of sport when I was young, so I guess it not only made me competitive, but also made me work well in a team and want to improve my skills.
