Meet A NASA Intern

Meet A NASA Intern

Meet Tully Mahr, a Gundungurra woman and an engineering student who recently interned at NASA! Tully is one of five students chosen by the National Indigenous Space Academy for a 10 week internship at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory!

KZ: Hi Tully! How long have you been interested in working in a space agency?

T: I've been dreaming of working in a space agency for as long as I can remember! When I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut, and I still do!

KZ: What experience did you have before starting the NASA internship?

T: Before jumping into the NASA internship, I had some cool experiences! I worked as a data scientist in the Australian Department of Education – kind of like a computer wizard with numbers. I also run my own tutoring business where I help awesome young minds (like K-Zoners) to do their very best at school. I've got a science degree under my belt, and I'm a big fan of aviation, too!

KZ: What inspired or influenced your decision to study mechanical engineering?

T: I decided to study mechanical engineering because I've always been curious about how machines work, and I find them really interesting. I especially love aeroplanes and have been passionate about flying since I was little. My family has a strong connection to aeroplanes, so I grew up around them, and that made me even more fascinated. I enjoy figuring out how things fit together and solving problems, so studying mechanical engineering lets me explore all of that and turn it into a cool career!

KZ: Did you take part in any activities or hobbies as a child that gave you skills you use as a mechanical engineer?

T: Growing up around planes fueled my love for flying, and that passion has stuck with me. Interestingly, I used to enjoy activities like putting together IKEA furniture. That might sound funny, but it actually helped me develop the skills needed in mechanical engineering – understanding how things fit together, solving problems, and making sure everything works smoothly. So, even as a kid, I was unknowingly practicing skills that now come in handy in my work with machines and engineering.

KZ: What would you say to K-Zoners who want to become a mechanical engineer?

T: Mechanical engineering is like being a superhero for machines, and you have the power to make incredible things happen. Believe in yourself because you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Never doubt your abilities, stay curious, and keep exploring the things you love.
