WHAT YOU NEED

• Empty jar with lid
• Clear liquid soap
• Vinegar
• Water
• Optional: Food colouring, glitter

WHAT TO DO

1. Fill the jar to three quarters full with water.
2. Add a teaspoon of liquid soap.
3. Add a teaspoon of vinegar.
4. Tighten the lid and shake the jar to mix all the ingredients.
5. Swirl the jar in a circular motion.
6. Watch as the liquid forms a small tornado!
7. You can also add a drop of food colouring, to make your tornado a fun colour.
8. Try adding glitter to see how debris would swirl around a tornado.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

The swirling motion will form a vortex inside the liquid in the jar, and you can use this miniature example to see how a tornado is formed by a vortex in air currents!
