WHAT YOU NEED
- Empty jar with lid
- Clear liquid soap
- Vinegar
- Water
- Optional: Food colouring, glitter
WHAT TO DO
- Fill the jar to three quarters full with water.
- Add a teaspoon of liquid soap.
- Add a teaspoon of vinegar.
- Tighten the lid and shake the jar to mix all the ingredients.
- Swirl the jar in a circular motion.
- Watch as the liquid forms a small tornado!
- You can also add a drop of food colouring, to make your tornado a fun colour.
- Try adding glitter to see how debris would swirl around a tornado.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
The swirling motion will form a vortex inside the liquid in the jar, and you can use this miniature example to see how a tornado is formed by a vortex in air currents!
