The creepy world of Wasteland is a bit like a darker, dented Disneyland. It’s where Disney designs go when they’ve been forgotten, so Mickey isn’t the master here, but Oswald the Lucky Rabbit – an actual Disney character from almost 100 years ago! It’s a world full of broken rides and baddies called blotlings, but Mickey can make it magical again with his bewitched brush. This wondrous wand can be used to both paint objects into existence and erase things from reality! A contraption without a cog? Colour it in! Busted bridge? Bring it back! It’s a cool concept but doesn’t quite come together, so the platforming and puzzle solving isn’t peak. We really wish the characters had voices, too. It’s weird watching them waffle on, with only subtitles on screen. On the plus side, there’s plenty of personality here and we love the 2D callbacks to classic Disney cartoons like Steamboat Willie.
GAME NINJA PRO TIP!
Smash everything! Every crate, barrel, statue and other breakable object is chock full of paint, thinner and currency that can be spent on upgrades. Look out for secrets too – there’s collectable art all over the place, and sometimes you’ll need to erase walls to reveal hidden rooms.
