WWE: Meet The New Day

We caught up with WWE Superstars Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E, AKA The New Day, on their visit to Australia! Want to read more of our interview? Grab the April 2023 ‘It’s-a Mario Issue’ of K-Zone, out now!

KZ: Hi Kofi, Xavier and Big E! What have you guys been up to in Australia?

KK: We’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of great things. The Sydney Opera House, which was amazing to go and be in the presence of that historical monument. We saw people on top of the Harbour Bridge doing I don’t know what, but they were brave souls up there. We were at Bondi Beach promoting WWE’s new partnership with BINGE.

XW: I wanted to see a koala and we got to go to the zoo and do that. We saw different kinds of animals. We saw a cassowary – that thing is huge. I would not want to fight that.

BE: I particularly like going to Bondi Beach. That was a lot of fun… it’s been an amazing trip. The food here has been incredible, the people have been incredible.

KZ: What was your experience with WWE before becoming awesome WWE Superstars? Did you watch it on TV?

KK: Absolutely. For myself, I was always a WWE fan growing up. I used to watch guys like Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat, Rey Mysterio Jr, Shawn Michaels – all those guys were just so amazing and incredible in the ring. They really compelled me to try and become a WWE Superstar. Even now when you watch a WWE show there’s all the storylines that go on, the pyrotechnics, the loud music. It’s just a great time all around and you just can’t help but be infatuated by the product and the process. I was infatuated to the point where I decided to pursue this career and I’m so glad that we did because here we are.

BE: I was a huge Goldberg fan; I loved WCW and also watched a ton of WWE and loved it as well. I got to meet him at a signing and it was incredible. We never had enough money to go to shows when I was a kid, so I never got to go to a WWE show but I would watch as much as possible. I would watch RAW, Smackdown, Nitro, Thunder. I would watch as much as I could and really loved it. That experience meeting Goldberg at a signing almost 25 years ago was really amazing because he was so kind and engaging. That short interaction is something that I remember all these years later. That’s a reminder to me that’s the way you’re supposed to treat people, that’s the way you’re supposed to interact with your fans. That was just really an incredible, incredible experience to be able to meet my childhood hero.

XW: I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, which was the epicentre for WCW (World Championship Wrestling) so I watched as much wrestling as I could – WCW, WWE, ECW, went to as many shows as possible whenever they came through town. I would even travel to go see shows when they weren’t close enough to watch. I’ve been obsessed that I can remember for the longest time, so being able to do this now and be in the position that we’re in is absolutely incredible.

KZ: What has been a personal standout moment of your career so far?

KK: It’s really hard to say what the highlight of our career has been. I think that we have been so fortunate to have achieved so much success. We have done so many incredible things, so many unique things and had opportunities that not a lot of people have had. We have hosted WrestleMania, we’ve gone toe-to-toe with The Rock on the mic, we were at one point the longest reigning Tag Team Champions in the history of the company, we won the most Tag Team Titles, we’ve had the most reigns in the history of the company. I’ve won the WWE Championship, which has been a childhood dream of mine. Xavier has won King of the Ring, which has been a childhood dream of his. E has also won the WWE Championship. It’s really difficult to pick just one moment because we appreciate them all. We’re very fortunate again to have achieved a lot of success, but we’re not done yet. We have a lot more things that we want to do in the industry, and outside of the industry. I feel like when it’s all said and done and we’re all retired and have stepped away from the business, maybe it will be a little easier to pick one specific moment.
