Wanna be a game creator? The
June issue of K-Zone is all about DIY, and
Disney Infinity 2.0's Toy Box is the perfect toolbox. Follow our steps to creating a basic racing game and then cut loose and create almost anything! Plus watch out for
Disney Infinity 3.0 coming soon!
Step 1: Planning Is Key
An awesome racing game starts with a cool idea! Ours started with mashing up
Mario Kart and
Marvel Super Heroes. Let's call it
Marvel Kart. No one sue us please!
Step 2: Start your Toy Box
2.0 can build game worlds for you or you can start with a blank. Either is fine but try to match your game world to the type of game you are making. Hectic volcano worlds would suit a platformer, and a nice grassy bowl or a cityscape makes a good racing game backdrop!
Step 3: Track your progress.
Now you have a backdrop it's time to create a gnarly track! 2.0 features jumps, loops, banked turns and if you need to get racing in a hurry you can always use the race track creator to instantly make a basic track and tweak it from there.
Step 4: Fire it up
Now the track is laid, it's time to add logic and events to your creation. You could add turrets, swinging hammers or fireworks to make the race more exciting, as well as things like the Battle Race Template to add weapons pick-ups and a podium finish.
Step 5: Details, details, details
The track, the background and the events are in place. Now what? Time to add those tiny tweaks that take a game from good to great! Zoom out from your creation with a critical eye. Could that jump be longer? Should you add an extra hairpin to spice up a section? Would a giant treehouse look rad in the middle of your racetrack? You can also add power discs to your base to totally flip the theme of your Toy Box instantly!
Step 6: Race (of) course!
Get your friends together and play your creation. You can play local split screen or online with up to four other players. Pay attention to how people race your track and get feedback on what's cool and what's not. Tweak until you have perfection! Congrats, you're now officially a game designer, woot!
