Speed Skating: there's short and long form speed skating, but as an Aussie, what you really need to know is in 2002, Aussie Steve Bradbury took home gold when every other competitor (who were all beating him) FELL OVER in front of him!
Snowboarding: pretty much the undisputed coolest sport in the Winter Olympics, Torah Bright and Chumpy Pullin are the most famous Aussie contenders. Yew!
Ski Jumping: first you build up HUGE speed, then get as much air as possible, then see how far you travel. Oh yeah, then you have to try to land and not fall over.
Nordic Combined: This is a combo (who woulda guessed?) of Ski Jumping and Cross-Country Skiing that you can compete in as an individual or a group. For the super-fit only.
Ice Hockey: this sport is the cricket equivalent for Canadians! The players get totally padded up, because if falling on the ice doesn't hurt enough, everyone is also carrying huge sticks!
Freestyle Skiing is where you'll see crazy-brave athetes get big air, compete in the half-pipe and otherwise do loads of stuff your mum wouldn't approve of. It's awesome to watch!
Figure Skating: it might look super graceful, but it is also massively athletic! Imagine spinning your partner around on the ground or throwing them up in the air, while you skate by on metal blades. Watch those fingers!
Curling: this is the undoubted winner of the 'Most Random-Best Pants' award at the Winter Olympics. There is no such award, but there should be.
Cross Country Skiing is slightly different to Alpine and Freestyle, in that your skis attach to your boots differently, and you cover looong distances. The atheletes make a weird striding motion to get going, and fastest wins.
Bobsleigh: Aussie Jana Pittman is aiming to be the first woman to compete in both the Summer and Winter Olympics when she suits up for her team bobsleigh event! Gooo Jana!
Biathlon: One of the more random combo events, Biathlon is where you Cross Country Ski a certain distance, then whip out a target rifle from your backpack and take aim! You get three shots at a target and it all goes to your score!
Alpine Skiing: the general idea with Alpine Skiing is to get to the bottom of the mountain as fast as possible. Instead of just rolling into a giant snowball, competitors are super talented skiers able to make sharp turns at high speeds.
Luge: it's basically sledding after way too much sugar! This takes guts: you speed down an icy track trying go as fast as possible!
Skeleton AKA back-to-front Luge (or should that be front to back?) either way - it's like the Luge but head first. Eeek!
