Behind The Scenes: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

We co-pilot with TT Games’ Associate Producer James Burgon to pick apart the millions of pieces that make up LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga! The game will be available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC in 2020!

KZ: Real talk. Will LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga just be the old LEGO Star Wars games with some shiny new pieces?

J: Nope. That’s not our style! The game is expanding just like the universe. It’s just getting bigger and bigger. It’s basically our love letter to Star Wars.

KZ: Speaking of bigger, how big is that LEGO Super Star Destroyer?

J: The Super Star Destroyer is 100 metres long. It’s over a million bricks. You can actually pilot the Millennium Falcon and dock into it. So you fly in and all the interiors are made of LEGO as well.

KZ: Did you build the Super Star Destroyer IRL?

J: I don’t know if anyone built them in the real world. I mean, that’s a million bricks. That’s a lot of the budget to go on LEGO! We have software. And we work with LEGO on certain pieces to make it the best.

KZ: Did you start with one LEGO set as a scale guide?

J: The Falcon. We always try and incorporate them one-to-one where we can. From that we built the scale for the rest. Obviously they just grow, like, trying to actually get them all to scale. It really feels authentic but it’s all made out of LEGO.

KZ: Did you ever wish you used MicroFighters for scale?

J: That would have been a pretty small game!

KZ: True! How many different minifigs are in this massive LEGO Star Wars universe?

J: We’ve probably got 400 when you consider all the NPCs and alien races. We’ve got Aqualish. We’ve got Jawas. We’ve got Devaronians, Neimoidians. The list just goes on and on. We really want to populate every planet with indigenous creatures.

KZ: How’s the combat changed?

J: We’ve got different combos now. No more just shooting and hoping for the best. Now you can add your own flair to how you dispatch enemies.

KZ: Cool!

J: It means every character is fun to play as, whether you’re hitting people with C-3PO and he’s doing cool combo moves, or you’re a Jedi or a Sith.

KZ: We noticed poor C-3PO was ‘beside himself’ falling apart.

J: It’s an evolution really from the original LEGO Star Wars. If he got shot, he might lose a leg and he hops around. But we thought, ‘Let’s just go one further and make him actually be able to pop his whole torso off and then mill around.’
