Monster truck racing may not be as fast as F1 or as radical as rally, but there’s something to be said for hulking mountains of metal atop titanic tyres careening around corners, jamming off jumps and fighting for first. Monster Jam Showdown takes players to three main locations in its Tour mode. There’s the parched desert of Death Valley, the forests and rivers of Colorado and the snowy wilderness of Alaska. A number of different event types await, including racing circuits, figure eight courses (so watch out for the other trucks!), head-to-head tournaments and freestyle contests where stunts reign supreme. The secret to success is building boost to blaze ahead, as well as tackling tight turns by using both front and rear steering. Courses are repeated a bit too much, but there’s plenty to unlock for diehard monster truck fans and up to eight players can compete online or you can take off in two player split screen.
