Meet A Videogames Curator and Public Programmer

Meet A Videogames Curator and Public Programmer

Meet Arieh Offman, a videogames curator and public programmer at ACMI in Melbourne, Australia’s museum of screen culture.

KZ: Hi Arieh! Did you study any subjects, do any activities or have any hobbies as a kid that gave you skills you use at work?

A: I think the most important part of my job is being able to read and to research, whether that’s about a new game that is coming out or about Australia’s videogame history.

KZ: What are the best and worst parts of your job?

A: The best part of my job is that it gives me a chance to explore and spend time with all of the things I am most passionate about – videogames, art, film, and television. My job also involves doing lots of different things, so I’m never bored, and I love being able to share my work with visitors to the museum.

KZ: What is the most interesting fact you’ve learned recently through your work?

A: The most interesting thing I have learned in the past few weeks is about this incredible new motion-capture technology that allows some to control a digital game character by moving their body. In the past you needed lots of special cameras and equipment to make this work, but this new equipment is very portable and easy to setup!

KZ: Do you have a favourite game or gaming character of all time, or at the moment?

A: I have a lot of favourite games, but the most fun game I have played in the last few months is Guardians of the Galaxy. It is a very funny adventure game, and I love the way that the characters have been written.

KZ: What would K-Zoners be surprised to learn about you?

A: Readers might be surprised to know that I also play a lot of instruments! I am best at piano and guitar, but can also play clarinet, drums and a few others.

What’s your favourite game? Let us know in the comments!
