Meet RTX Aus Gaming Ambassadors, Joel and Blaine

Joel and Blaine talk about the coolest job EVER!

We caught up with gaming ambassadors Joel and Blaine to talk all things games, Star Wars, pranks and extreme stuff before they appear at RTX Australia in Sydney in January!

K-Z: What is your favourite game at the moment?

J: Star Wars Battlefront is big on my list right now. I played the beta for way too long – I was on that thing for ages. Even just playing it for a couple of minutes, since I’m a big Star Wars fan, I got a little emotional! Whenever I discover a favourite game, it will only usually last like three or four weeks, but it hasn’t happened for Minecraft. I like Minecraft as much now as I did when it came out. It’s so playable and has grown so much since it came out.

K-Z: How do you play Minecraft? What kind of a Minecrafter are you?

J: It’s funny because when it comes to Minecraft, I just build things, and I just keep building. I keep saying to myself, at some point I’ll actually pursue the Ender Dragon. I haven’t gotten to that point yet, because I haven’t finished my house in seven years. I’m still building.

B: I’m afraid to approach Minecraft because when I was little, LEGO was my big thing and I was obsessed. I was constantly building and very creative with it. I know I’ll lose my life if I start playing Minecraft. I don’t even want to dip my toe into that world because I know I’ll become emerged in it.

K-Z: Have you ever played a prank within a videogame?

J: In Minecraft, we’ll go destroy each other’s buildings or make alterations to other peoples houses. It basically involves a bucket of lava, it usually always ends up in a good fire and a lot of laughs.

K-Z: What’s the best prank you’ve seen or been part of?

J: Our friend Bernie got a Nintendo DS and was going to Gus, another friends, house to deliberately StreetPass him! So Gus’ DS was saying ‘Oh we passed each other” and Bernie would go to Gus’ house in the middle of the night and do that. Gus would freak out and be like “Why am I street passing Bernie, Bernie’s not even here!” Bernie did that for weeks and then he eventually told Gus he did it. Then I bought my own Nintendo DS and was doing it secretly – I didn’t tell anybody about my new DS, so I made a fake account and I kept StreetPassing everybody to freak them out.

K-Z: We hear you guys are Star Wars fans. Can you rate your Star Wars fandom?

B: I hate to brag… But I think I’m the biggest Star Wars fan I know. It’s not just the movies for me; it’s the comic books, the cartoon shows, and the extended universe books. If anyone starts talking to me about Star Wars, I get really passionate and fired up. I bought tickets for four showings of The Force Awakens before it came out.

J: I saw the first Star Wars movie in the theatre when it first came out! I can name every singe type of ship in the Star Wars Universe, which might not seem that impressive, but if you gave me a diagram, there are ships you’re not going to know, but I will. I played the original Star Wars: X Wing and TIE Fighter games. I’ve lived with Star Wars longer, so by default that makes me the biggest fan.

K-Z: Sounds like your Star Wars fandom is extreme! What’s the most extreme activity either of you have done?

B: For my 25th birthday I bought myself a solo skydiving class lesson, so I learned to skydive and I basically just had a guy holding onto my leg, but it was fun.

J: Tandem skydiving is funny because it feels weird at first to have someone strapped to you, until the airplane door opens and you’re instantly thinking “I’m so glad there is a guy strapped to me right now!”

Joel and Blaine will be at RTX Australia on January 23-24th, 2016, at the Australian Technology Park in Sydney. RTX Australia is for older K-Zoners only and if youre planning on attending RTX Australia, youll need a parent or guardian to accompany you to the event.
