If you’re mad for Minecraft, you may know that there are two versions of the game – Java and Bedrock. What are the differences? Let’s dig into them! Available On: ANDROID, IOS, PC, PS4, PS5, SWITCH, XBOX ONE, XBOX X/S

SYSTEMATIC
Java is the OG edition of Minecraft and you can only rock it on PC. Bedrock is the newer kid on the block and is also on PC, as well as consoles, phones and tablets. If you play on PlayStation or have a soft spot for survival on Switch, you’re on Bedrock. One isn’t better than the other, and Minecraft developer Mojang supports both.

MASSIVE FOR MODS
Mods let you completely change Minecraft, adding new mobs, biomes, structures, abilities, looks, challenges and so much more. On Java there’s an infinite array of free mods, but the set-up can be a bit tricky, so you’ll probs need to suss it out with mum or dad, whereas on Bedrock add-ons typically cost cash and are collared courtesy of the official Marketplace.

GETTING TUBULAR
Most Minecraft YouTubers play Java, so if you’re on Bedrock you may not be able to replicate the stuff you see online. Mods are an obvs diff, but stuff like Redstone, which lets you make mega machines, is also tweaked a tad. Commands differ a bit too. Want a sword with 1000 sharpness? The command only works in Java.

CROSS-PLAY CO-OP
One of the best things about Bedrock is you can play with friends on any other Bedrock Edition. Want to have a Minecraft meet-up using PCs, consoles and iPads? No probs! Java Edition, meanwhile, only plays with Java Edition. Java is also all about mouse and keyboard control, whereas Bedrock is plug and play for controllers or touch.

ARE YOU HARDCORE?
Minecraft Java Edition has one big option that Bedrock doesn’t: Hardcore Mode. This style of Survival is set to Hard difficulty and the player only has one life. If you die, that’s it, you’re starting all over again! Playing this way ain’t for the faint of heart, but it’s a choice challenge for extra experienced Minecrafters that’s only in one version.

LITTLE DIFFERENCES!
Characters blink in Bedrock but not Java. The crafting recipes for maps and barrels are different. Skins can be see-through on Bedrock but not Java. Bedrock Withers have twice the health as in Java and will spawn in wither skeletons. Spider jockeys are in both but Bedrock has zombies riding about a dozen other mobs too. Armour stands on Bedrock can hold stuff!
