KZ: Hi Oceana! When did you decide to start competing in Sport Climbing?
O: I used to do some social comps at local comps and my love for competition started then. But at my first nationals I was so nervous I couldn't eat breakfast! I was also just so excited.
KZ: How did you feel when you qualified to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in Paris?
O: I was so excited to see climbing be represented at the Games, and to also be the person participating too!
KZ: We're so excited for you! Are there any other sports you’re keen to watch while you’re in Paris?
O: I don't usually watch any other sports, but I'm keen to watch the skateboarding, and hopefully some gymnastics!
KZ: Do you have any pre-competition traditions that help you focus before competing?
O: I would say I am pretty reserved before competitions, I'm a pretty big introvert so reserving my energy is important. I usually eat noodles the night before qualies as well.
KZ: What often surprises people when you talk about Sport Climbing?
O: How long the comps go for – some people are in isolation for around seven hours before they climb. We also have new routes and boulders every competition.
KZ: Wow, seven hours! If you could add a fun new rule to the sport, what would it be?
O: You could choose a friend or competitor to come onto the mats with you, it would be so fun!
KZ: Love that idea! Other than sport climbing, is there a skill you have that you believe deserves a gold medal?
O: I can do a really good "I'm Batman" voice.
KZ: Awesome! When you were a child, did you have any hobbies that gave you useful skills for sport climbing?
O: Not really a hobby or activity, but I would say having a really supportive and creative family has helped me a huge amount.
