KZ: Hi Campbell! When did you decide to start competing in Sport Climbing?
C: I did my first local competitions in 2009, and started competing internationally for the first time in 2012. Before my first events I was definitely nervous, as I wanted to finish the events feeling like I'd done my best, which is a feeling that I still hold to this day.
KZ: How did you feel when you qualified to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in Paris?
C: Qualifying for Paris was the most amazing, emotional experience I've ever had. To work so hard for a dream and have it come true as a result of that hard work is a feeling beyond words.
KZ: Congratulations! Do you have any pre-competition traditions that help you focus before competing?
C: I usually like to stay pretty flexible in my routines before a competition. Sometimes when you're travelling overseas it's hard to predict what kinds of facilities you'll have access to, so you want to know that you can be prepared no matter the situation.
KZ: If you could add a fun new rule to the sport, what would it be?
C: In lead climbing, you only get one go! It would be fun to be able to try the routes a second time!
KZ: Sounds so intense! When you were a child, did you have any hobbies that you believe gave you useful skills for sport climbing?
C: I tried lots of other sports and activities growing up like Aussie Rules Football, Karate, Chess, Scouts, Musical Theatre etc. I think they all taught me their own lessons about working hard at something, and practicing until it's almost perfect.
KZ: Other than sport climbing, is there a skill you have that you believe
deserves a gold medal?
C: I should get a gold medal for how long I can talk to/at my friends and family about something that interests me!
KZ: Ahaha! Are there any other sports you’re keen to watch while you’re in Paris?
C: I love watching gymnastics, as the strength required is very similar to climbing, but they use their bodies in an entirely different way!
The Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024!
