Ghostly Games

The ultimate list of games, locations and levels for gamers who want to get into the spooky spirit!

1. Luigi’s Mansion 3

The third main installment in the Luigi’s Mansion series is one of our faves, but we definitely recommend playing the other games in the series too! In Luigi’s Mansion 3, you play as Luigi and must explore a haunted hotel with different themes on every floor. Your friends were tricked into visiting the hotel for a vacation by King Boo, so you need to rescue them from the ghosts inside! You’ll be catching ghosts by stunning ‘em with Luigi’s Strobulb, snagging ‘em with his Poltergust and weakening their ghostly health in order to capture them. Say hello to Gooigi, your ectoplasmic doppelganger of Luigi that will help in battles and solving puzzles!

2. Pokémon Red & Blue – Lavender Town

This haunted location is home to the Pokémon Tower, a burial ground for Pokémon! If you have ever played this game, you know the background music gives this level and town a creepy atmosphere. You’ll find plenty of ghost-type Pokémon here, and you’ll only be able to capture them in the tower. You can visit Lavender Town in other Pokémon games, but this was the original.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask – The Moon

This ominous object will destroy Clock Town! It is destined to crash into the location, which will obliterate the area and the rest of Termina. Once Link arrives, he finds he only has three days to prevent this lunar disaster, and searches for Four Giants in temples throughout Termina. No spoilers but things get weird and spooky… There are curses and possessions and a few Moon Children to play with – pick wisely!

4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – The Bottom of the Well

There are plenty of spooky sections to this game, but Bottom of the Well is our pick. This mini-dungeon is located in Kakariko Village (at the bottom of Kakariko Well, AKA the Well of Three Features). It holds an underground chamber that guards the Lens of Truth. Sure, this spot may have no effect on the main quest if you choose to ignore it – but! Yes, there’s a but. Without the Lens of Truth, you’ll have much more difficulty finding the Haunted Wasteland, Spirit Temple, Shadow Temple and Ganon’s Castle. Plus, there are a few treasures you’ll miss throughout Hyrule, since you can only find them with the Lens of Truth. The Bottom of the Well is a murky, damp sewer filled with fake walls and scary imagery – it’s a terrifying maze filled with ReDeads, Wallmasters, Dead Hands and more. Fun!

5. Kingdom Hearts – Halloween Town

This world in the game is based on the Disney film, The Nightmare Before Christmas! Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King and leader of Halloween Town, a town based on the holiday of Halloween and exists in a constant state of night. Your quest involves the Heartless, an artificial heart, and plenty of monstrous villains. This world has a twisted, creepy appearance and you’ll need your wits about you to make it to the Keyhole underneath Oogie Boogie’s manor!

6. Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon
and Spyro Reignited Trilogy – Spooky Swamp

This swamp realm can be accessed in the Midday Gardens homeworld after collecting 25 Dragon Eggs. The fireflies that live here are peaceful, but they are bullied by other creatures and are afraid of the Wizard. Spyro will need to eliminate these enemies in order to bring peace back to the realm. Through the level, you must navigate the swamp while defeating creepy crawly creatures and lighting candles in order to bring light to the dark swamp. This level has Halloween vibes for sure, and the mini-boss fight against the magical Wizard will be scary! Watch out for the water too – it’s filled with pranhas!

7. Super Mario 64 – Big Boo’s Haunt

The fifth course in Super Mario 64 (and Super Mario 64 DS), Big Boo’s Haunt is located in the Castle Courtyard, which can be accessed after defeating the larger Boo in the castle courtyard, then walking up to the mansion in a cage once it appears. The speedy Merry Go Round in the sewers, haunted library, Mr. I and Big Boo boss will send shivers down your spine! You can find a secret area in the DS remake too, where you’ll play as Luigi. The music track in Big Boo’s Haunt gives the mansion a very eerie feeling, and the carnival music of the rotating Merry Go Round will be stuck in your head. Speaking of music, watch out for that piano!

8. Banjo Kazooie – Mad Monster Mansion

Looking for Mad Monster Mansion? Head to the Graveyard section of Gruntilda’s Lair – past the Lava Room on the sixth floor. The picture is on the seventh floor, in the third room you enter through underwater passages. It’s the smallest map in the game, but more complex than most other worlds. Have fun figuring out the maze – and enjoy transforming into a pumpkin!

9. Sonic Adventure 2 – Pumpkin Hill

The sixth stage of Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is set in the twilight hours, with pumpkins and ghosts that will appear without warning to surprise you. Those creepy yellow eyes on the boos… Ahh! At least you’re playing as big, tough Knuckles! Watch out for the fire-breathing mechanised skulls, and charge full steam ahead towards Ghost Train Mountain.
