Sonic got his speedy start on Sega’s Mega Drive, and this compilation packs all the hasty hedgehog’s best outings from that classic console. Better still, each game comes with brand new - and super slick - opening and ending animations, cool character select options, and new ways to play, like Boss Rush mode. You can even blitz through all four games as one long story! But where does the Plus come in? The Plus part is about portable play, with 12 Sonic outings from Sega’s super old school handheld games device, the Game Gear. These include platformers like Sonic Chaos, racers like Sonic Drift, puzzlers like Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine and even standalone adventures for Tails, like Tails’ Skypatrol. The graphics and sound are really retro, and the gameplay is definitely hit and miss, but for super Sonic supporters, there’s no doubt these games are an important part of the hog’s history!

Amy Rose is now playable in the anniversary edition games! You can also select her in the classic editions but the option is hidden. In the original Sonic, for instance, input Up, Down, Left, Right and A (on Xbox / Switch, X on PS) then change the “player” to 04 and choose a level!
